The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) recorded 5 more ash emissions or “ashing” events at Kanlaon Volcano.
In an advisory issued yesterday, PHIVOLCS said the ash eruptions lasted five to 10 minutes. It also logged 21 volcanic quakes in the past 24 hours.
PHIVOLCS defines volcanic earthquakes as those “generated by magmatic processes or magma-related processes beneath or near an active volcano.”
It warned that increased ash discharge may lead to “eruptive unrest.”
PHIVOLCS again reminded the public that Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) prevails over Kanlaon.
The recent inspection conducted by the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park of the waterfalls in So. Guintubdan, Barangay Ara-al, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, indicated that the water had taken on a brownish hue, likely due to sediment runoff, triggered by recent rainfall in the area.
PHIVOLCS also reported that the volcano released 4,896 tons of sulfur dioxide flux on November 28.
Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer radius permanent danger zone and flying any aircraft close to it is prohibited.*
