5 rent-tangay-sangla vehicles recovered in NegOr

• RICHARD T. CABALLERO JR.

The Provincial Highway Patrol Team (PHPT) in Negros Oriental successfully recovered five motor vehicles linked to the rent-tangay-sangla modus on Tuesday, following a series of sustained follow-up operations across the province.

Rent-tangay-sangla modus is a scheme where suspects lure car owners to enter into a rent-a-car agreement, after which the suspects will later pawn the vehicle using falsified documents without the knowledge of the owner.

The 5-hour operation conducted by the Highway Patrol Group resulted in the discovery of five vehicles connected to the modus, demonstrating the unit’s continuous and intelligence-driven enforcement efforts.

Recovered vehicles include two Toyota Vios units at Barangays Motong and Calindagan, Dumaguete City; a Mitsubishi XForce and Hyundai Creta at Purok 2, Barangay Mag-aso, Dauin; and an MG ZS Trophy at Barangay Poblacion, Basay.

Investigation revealed that all recovered vehicles were legally rented and later pawned to different individuals, using falsified certificates of registration under the name of ‘Jethro,’ who had been previously arrested by the unit and is currently detained at the Dumaguete City Police Station detention facility.

The recovered motor vehicles were presented at the PHPT Negros Oriental Office, Capitol Area, Barangay Taclobo, Dumaguete City.

All recovered vehicles are now under custodial investigation and will undergo macro-etching examination and further verification to establish their true ownership before being turned over to their rightful owners.*
