The 2022 Governor’s Cup 5X5 Basketball Tournament (A Tribute to Dodong Bascon’s Contribution to Negros Basketball) will open tomorrow, 1 pm at the Talisay City Gymnasium.
The tournament organized by the Negros Occidental Provincial Government and the Provincial Sports Office (PSO) brings together thirteen teams that are a combination of LGUs and schools that have confirmed participation in the Abanse Negrense Sports Programs tournament.
Bracket A teams include Cadiz City, Dumaguete City, Talisay City – Notredame, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R), Colegio de San Agustin-Bacolod (CSA-B), Escalante City, and EB Magalona.
The teams for Bracket B are Silay City, La Consolacion College (LCC), STI-West Negros University (STI-WNU), Bago City, La Carlota City, and Bacolod City.
All players are bona fide 21-under (born 2001) college students of Negros Occidental.
The game schedules for November 12 are as follows:
First game is at 8 a.m. with the team of Bago City against La Consolacion College-Bacolod (Bracket B); 9:30 a.m., University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos versus EB Magalona (A); 2 p.m., STI-West Negros University versus La Carlota City (B); and at 3:30 p.m., Talisay City-Notredame against Dumaguete City (B).
On Sunday, November 13, the first game is at 2 p.m. with the team from Dumaguete City against Cadiz City (Bracket A); 3:30 p.m., La Carlota City versus Bacolod City (B); and at 5 p.m., Escalante City against Talisay City-Notredame (A).
Trophies, special recognitions, and prizes will be awarded to the winning teams, as well as the Most Valuable Player and the Mythical Five. A muse is also required for each participating team, with the most outstanding one receiving a cash prize.
Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and PSO head Anthony Carlo Agustin are expected at the opening ceremony on Sunday, together with other special guests.
The tournament is in honor of the late Oscar “Dodong” Bascon, who was one of the pillars of basketball in Negros Occidental and the president of the NBA (Negros Basketball Association).
Bascon, aka Mr. NBA, was a goodwill ambassador of basketball who promoted the sport in the province. He was also the NABA (Negros Amateur Boxing Association) Vice President.*
