Twinkling with Ninfa R. Leonardia

What would poet William Shakespeare have said about the problem of mask-wearing? Seems that has become quite an issue, especially among some schools in the United States where there is no set rule for wearing the protective device against infection by the “flavor of the century”, or, shall we say, the most frightful pandemic our generation has to contend with? I don’t think we have such a problem in our country, but in the United States, students, school officials, parents and teachers seem to disagree on whether to require its use.

In that issue, I think Filipinos are more reasonable and compliant, which is probably why – and cross your fingers as you read this – we are, comparatively speaking, less victimized by this virus that China has managed to share virtually with the whole world. Don’t forget that it was in that place called Wuhan there where the virus had been determined to have originated. And Oh! How speedily it spread throughout the world, and if I were to use a hyperbole, maybe in the entire universe!

But it seems as if mask-wearing has become a big issue in the United States where school officials, parents and students  do not agree on the need, or its benefits. I saw a report noting that Florida was one of the   states with such a problem. We can say, therefore, that Pinoys are more concerned about their health, and more compliant with this defense against the raging pandemic. I really cannot understand why such people refuse to acknowledge the effectivity  of that very simple, inexpensive, but very effective device.

Is vanity one of the reasons why some people, women especially, dislike the wearing of masks? I would think they would feel favored by it, because they may not need to spend much time and money in making up their faces every time they step out of their homes. And, when you come to think of it, masks can even be part of their outfit, especially if they can match it with their clothes for the day! How about that, girls? Try thinking of masks as an accessory, not an inconvenience, and don’t forget, a life-saver as well!

***

You’d think that the United States that most people and countries consider the leader not only in fashion, but also in practices of such professions as medicine would be the strongest advocate for the wearing of masks, especially by young people, like students who cannot be controlled from getting together and observing social distancing in their  activities, especially before and after classes. And yet arguments are going on among school officials, parents and teachers, as to the necessity of wearing masks. I think this problem was noted in Florida that is also a favorite destination for vacationists. Well, forewarned is forearmed, they say, and if others insist, on going to any place that does not observe the so-called “protocols”, let them be.

One could hardly believe it, but it looks as if the United States is among the hardest-hit countries by the COVID. And yet it seems that some people are still resistant to vaccination, despite the fact that the acknowledged “guru” of the COVID, Dr. Antony Fauci, has declared that it is the sure preventive against the virus. And yet millions still refuse to undergo it, and I don’t think there is any law that could require them to do so, again,  let them be. Just ensure that you can identify the “spreaders” and avoid them as much as you can.

***

A report on TV the other day said that 150,000 new  case of COVID infections are recorded in the United States everyday! But one cannot accuse the reporters of exaggerating, their items are broadcast all over the world, and they would surely be chastised if they are just making up their figures. Not only that, the law could also be harsh on such “harbingers” of bad and false news. So let us take a cue from such reports and adopt all the protective devices and advices we have access to,  and keep praying for deliverance against this pandemic, as from all evils, Amen.

But is President Duterte serious when he keeps saying  that he will run for vice president, instead of reelection come election time? Now there are movements endorsing his daughter, Sara, now mayor of their city, to run for the presidency. How do you like the idea of a daughter and dad tandem leading our country? If that happens I hope Sara is not the type who, before acting, will say, “Wait a minute, I will ask Papa first”. Or will Papa still be the power behind the throne? Seems unlikely, no?*
