If you have been following on TV events in the United States, you, like me, will be likely to conclude that it is not Joe Biden who will beat Donald Trump in the elections in November. No, not Biden, nor any other possible candidate, but he himself will bring on his doom. How? because of the dissatisfaction of his people on the way he has been responding to the pandemic that has apparently hit his country worse than any other major ones in the world. Have you ever noted, how he has barely been quoted on the subject, despite the fatality rate his country has marked up?

Well, their elections are not so distant, and we will see how the Americans will react to the way he had been leading them through this crisis. Doesn’t it worry him that even some of his fellow Republicans are reported to be backing former vice president Joe Biden, his likely opponent? It looks, however, that Trump is very confident that he has his reelection “in the bag”, and that he could only lose “if the elections were rigged!” Seems he is trying to condition the minds of voters that they may not have a clean and honest election.

An item in the news recently noted that the women of the world have been battling for 100 years in order to gain equality. Well, well. I don’t know about others, but that surely is not true of our country, small as it is. We have, so far, elected two women as president, has the United States ever had one, even as a candidate for the post? But recently a woman has been picked to be a vice presidential candidate, and let us see how she will fare in the election. Kamala Harris is said to be of Indian roots, so she would be ideal for the position and will please the colored community.

Even Michelle Obama – remember her, the first lady of the first colored American to become president – spoke up recently and said that Trump is the wrong president for their country. Maybe his time had not yet come? Alas, his time also happened to be the worst time for a lackluster leadership. There are also Americans who have dared to be quoted on TV that they lamented that the U.S. seems to have made the worst response of any major country to this pandemic. Day by day, the statistics on infections and deaths seem to be rising, and their brightest minds in science and medicines seem to be helpless, too.

Oh, but shouldn’t we be envious? The City of Wuhan in China, where this deadly virus orinated, recently celebrated a festival and it was a festival of great rejoicing and an onlooker could have exclaimed “Look, Ma – no masks!” That is true, because as reported by CNN, it was a grand celebration, indeed. Were they celebrating because they no longer had any cases of the coronavirus that had already traveled on to a lot of countries around the world? I hope they were dancing to appease the evil spirit that had brought the virus and appealing to it to go away from the entire world forever.

Well, at last, Malacañang has been transparent enough to announce that President Duterte is alive and well, but only out of Malacañang, and in his home city, Davao. For some time, Filipinos were worried about their President who, after all, is no longer a “spring chicken” and in his seventies already. So it was a relief when he appeared on TV yesterday, looking a bit pale but apparently all right. It was a consolation as well as a relief to know that our leader is still at the helm.

Meanwhile, a desperate appeal is coming from Boracay, the country’s major tourism attraction, that has been having a bad time because of the absence of visitors that used to fill up its hotels and throngs on its beaches. Now thousands are jobless, and hotels and eateries are virtually empty, which led also to the reduction of personnel of such entites. But, as the saying goes, “Hindi sila nag-iisa”, they are not alone. What business could be said to be thriving these days? Maybe hospitals and pharmacies, and, alas, funeral parlors, memorial parks and cemeteries!

Let’s have some fun in the coming days by keeping track of the U.S. election. I am sure it will be fun listening to the name-calling and personal insults the candidates will be exchanging, as they have already began doing. Madame Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s vice-presidential choice said that Trump was “not up to the job”, and Trump forgot to be a gentleman and called her “Aunt Jemima”. I don’t know if that breakfast item is still popular here, but for sure those who love that pancake will remember Ms. Harris when they go to the polls.*
