ACCESS welcomes electricity rate reduction

The president of the Alliance of Concerned Consumers in Electricity and Social Services (ACCESS), welcomed the recent reduction in electricity rates by Negros Power, calling it an unexpected but much-needed relief in the face of the ongoing oil price hike (OPH).

“At a time when rising fuel costs are driving up the overall cost of living, this decrease in electricity rates is a welcome development,” Wennie Sancho said in a press release, adding “It offers a financial cushion for households and businesses already burdened by inflation and economic uncertainty.”

According to ACCESS, the lower electricity bills will help ease the pressure on consumers, allowing families to stretch their budgets and small businesses to allocate resources more efficiently. While the reduction may not completely offset the impact of the OPH, it represents a significant step toward financial relief.

“The timing couldn’t have been more fortuitous,” Sancho added. “As fuel and basic commodities prices continue to surge, this rate cut feels like a response to the silent pleas of consumers trying to make ends meet.”

Whether seen as a well-timed decision or a fortunate coincidence, Sancho emphasized that the action taken by Negros Power has provided hope. “In trying times, even small victories matter. This move by Negros Power reminds us that solutions are possible, and that some power providers are willing to extend a helping hand.”

However, ACCESS also cautioned that with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, global fuel prices are likely to rise further. This may lead to higher generation charges in future billing cycles, which are typically passed on to consumers.

“We remain hopeful that the trading team of Negros Power will continue to secure the lowest possible rates in the spot market through vigilant monitoring and responsible purchasing,” Sancho’s statement said. “Consumers are counting on their expertise to mitigate future impacts.”*
