Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology hoisted alert level 1 over Mt. Kanlaon in Central Negros after volcanic earthquakes were recorded in the last 24 hours.

This means that Mt. Kanlaon is in an abnormal condition and has entered a period of unrest, the Phivolcs said in its advisory.

It stressed that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger zone is prohibited, and warned against the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Civil aviation authorities also advised aircraft pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption is dangerous to aircrafts.

Phivolcs will continue to monitor the activities of the volcano.

On November 24, Phivolcs noted that sulfur dioxide emission at Mt. Kanlaon was at 336 tonnes per day while slight inflations in the lower and mid slopes had been seen since June this year. Phivolcs explained that this is an indication that hydrothermal or magmatic processes are occurring beneath the volcano.*
