Alvarez offers Miranda couple Kabankalan city hall job if he wins

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Former Representative Genaro Alvarez, who decided to return to politics by joining six other candidates in the Kabankalan City mayoral race, admitted yesterday that he did not inform his family of his intention prior to the filing of his Certificate of Candidacy on October 8, the last day of filing of COCs for the 2025 midterm elections.

Asked if his run has the blessing of his daughter, incumbent Rep. Mercedes Alvarez, the former solon said “I think it’s the other way around. They have no choice but to support me.”

Alvarez, 81, who stressed that he is qualified to run for public office, is vying for the Kabankalan mayoral position, against incumbent Mayor Benjie Miranda, former mayor Isidro Zayco, and four other independent candidates.

Running for vice mayor and the running mate of Alvarez is Alice Zayco, daughter of former Mayor Pedro Zayco, who was defeated by Miranda in the 2022 elections. The sister of Alice, Ann, is a councilor aspirant of Kabankalan City, under the slate of former mayor Isidro Zayco.

Alvarez said the Zayco brothers are his second cousins.

Alvarez confirmed to have met with Miranda and wife and vice mayoral candidate, Divina, who visited him at his office in Kabankalan City, which elicited speculation from the public.

Stressing that Miranda was his supporter when the former was still a barangay kagawad, Alvarez said he told the incumbent mayor that if he wins in the 2025 polls, he will employ Miranda and his wife in City Hall. Should he lose in the elections, Alvarez said they need not to worry, since he doesn’t need a job in the government.

Alvarez said he also asked former Mayor Isidro Zayco, his second cousin, that they should avoid hurling of issues against each other, as it would not do good for the both of them.

I am not his enemy, but Miranda, who defeated his brother in the previous elections, he stressed.

Of the 32 barangays in Kabankalan City, Alvarez said he already visited 21 barangays, of which the barangay officials in 20 villages welcomed him.

His son, Paul Alvarez, is seeking reelection as mayor of Ilog, with John Paulo Alvarez, as his running mate, seeking the vice mayor position. Genaro Ralph Alvarez, a grandson of former Rep. Alvarez, is also a board member aspirant for the 6th district of Negros Occidental.*
