Cases of amoebiasis are on the rise in Brgy. Manlucahoc, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.
City Health officer, Dr. Florecio Juplo disclosed on Wednesday that they recorded 31 barangay residents who experienced symptoms of amoebiasis, such as stomach aches and loose bowel movement.
Ten of the barangay residents are currently being treated at the Merceditas Montilla District Hospital in Sipalay City.
Amoebiasis is an intestinal (bowel) illness caused by a microscopic parasite called Entamoeba histolytica, which is spread through human feces.
Among its symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, stomach tenderness, and occasional fever.
Initial investigation conducted by the Sipalay City Health Office indicated that Manlucahoc barangay residents are getting their water supply from a spring and open well.
Juplo said the CHO, in coordination with barangay officials, initiated chlorination of the water sources in the barangay to prevent more cases.*
