Another ashing event logged at Kanlaon volcano

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported on Friday that another ashing event, which lasted five minutes, was observed at the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.

PHIVOLCS described an ashing event as “gray ash being entrained or brought out by continuous degassing from the Kanlaon Volcano.”

In the past 24 hours, Phivolcs recorded 12 volcanic quakes and logged the emission of 8,040 tons of sulfur dioxide, with plumes rising about 300 meters, that drifted west and west southwest.

Alert Level 2 (increasing unrest) still prevails over Kanlaon volcano, after its phreatic eruption on June 3.

Entry into the volcano’s 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone, and flying any aircraft close to it are prohibited.

Sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may also occur.*
