The Apostolic Nunciature in Manila yesterday warned church institutions and private individuals to deny solicitation letters using the name of a former papal envoy to the Philippines.
Monsignor Julien Kabore, the Nunciature’s Chargé d’Affaires, urged the public to be cautious against unknown persons using the email ggiocaccia@gmail.com, allegedly from Archbishop Gabriele Caccia, seeking funds through illegal means.
The warning was contained in a letter sent to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in a letter dated July 30.
Kabore also urged church institutions to use “maximum prudence” in dealing with online fund solicitations, particularly when using the name of Vatican officials.
“In the event they do encounter such attempts, it is best if they get in touch with this Nunciature before doing any action,” he said in an article posted on the CBCP news website.
Caccia, a former Vatican representative to the Philippines, has been appointed as the Vatican’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations.
Last May, the Nunciature also alerted the bishops against a certain Cristian Eduardo Tietze who claimed to be close to Pope Francis.
