Barangay Tangub in Bacolod City is set to implement a simplified celebration for the feast of Patron San Isidro Labrador in May this year, redirecting the majority of its traditional festival funds toward economic assistance.
Barangay Captain Noli Villarosa stated that the decision was made in consideration of the current financial difficulties many residents are facing.
Under the plan, the usual P2,000,000 fiesta budget will be reduced to P100,000.
The surplus funds are intended to be converted into fuel coupons for around 200 tricycle and jeepney drivers, with Villarosa aiming to provide at least 10 liters of fuel per coupon to assist with daily transport costs.
This move follows a resolution approved by the Sangguniang Panlungsod, authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito, which encourages Bacolod barangays to scale down festivities and prioritize essential services such as social amelioration and livelihood programs.
The measure highlights the need to support public utility drivers and low-income families through fund realignment, urging local leaders to favor food security and emergency response over non-essential spending during the ongoing global oil crisis.
Distrito said that while cultural traditions remain important, the local government is empowered to adopt low-cost observances to ensure that community resources are channeled toward those most affected by the rising cost of living.*
