The Bacolod City Government issued an urgent appeal to the public to stop the spread of misinformation as Tropical Depression Basyang moved through the region.
Mayor Greg Gasataya addressed the circulation of fake news that caused unnecessary panic among residents, noting that in the middle of a storm, many people are still spreading misleading reports on social media.
He stated that it was deeply regrettable that during a calamity or emergency, some individuals took advantage of the situation to spread fake news just for clout, fame, or monetization.
Verified reports and legitimate photos from the City Administrator Atty. Mark Steven Mayo confirmed that key areas, such as Lacson Street, Barangay Sincang-Airport, and SM vicinity, remained manageable despite the weather, compared to social media posts of some content creators claiming that areas were submerged in flood.
The mayor said that the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and other agencies strictly monitored the situation in the barangays and provided updates based only on verified information.
“In times of disaster, truth saves lives. Let us act responsibly and verify before we share,” Gasataya said.
He urged everyone to remain vigilant not only against the storm but also against fake news, deception, and disinformation.*
