Bacolod logs 6 dengue deaths, but cases declining

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Amid reports of six dengue-related deaths in Bacolod City, the City Health Office (CHO) reported a continuing decline in dengue cases, as of September 13.

In a report, CHO said it recorded six dengue related deaths in the barangays of Alijis, Mansilingan, Vista Alegre, Handumanan, Villamonte, and Mandalagan in Bacolod City.

It also logged 840 dengue cases from January to September 13 this year, which is a reduction of 45.9 percent compared to 1,552 cases and four deaths, during the same period last year.

Majority of the victims have ages ranging from 1 to 19 years old.

CHO also recorded six deaths related to cases of leptospirosis, out of 24 cases reported from January to Sept. 13 this year.

Cases of leptospirosis increased by 33.3 percent, compared to 18 cases with six deaths last year.

Leptospirosis is a blood infection caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira that can infect humans, dogs, rodents, and many other wild and domesticated animals.

Its symptoms include sudden onset of fever, headache, chills, severe muscle aches (especially in the calves and back), and red eyes, which can be confused with other illnesses like the flu.*
