Bacolod City has detected six new delta variant of the COVID-19 virus which brings the total number of patients infected with the delta variant to 21.

Bacolod City Administrator Em Ang, concurrent executive director of the Emergency Operations Center, yesterday said the delta variant of COVID-19 could have caused the rise of infections in the city for the past five consecutive days.

Ang said the delta variant could infect several members of the family of a COVID-19 positive patient. Some have 12, 14 or even 19 members in one family.

So they continue to conduct contact tracing and testing and are trying their best to mitigate the spread of the virus, she said.

As of yesterday alone, Bacolod has recorded a total of 164 cases, she added.

Ang said they have started to extract the COVID-19 positive patients Sunday evening and they were made to undergo repeat testing yesterday together with their close contacts.

The city has a quarantine facility dedicated to patients infected with the delta variant.  If their test result is negative, they can continue their quarantine at home because they are no longer considered active cases, she said.

The problem is that by the time they receive the result from the Philippine Genome Center, the isolation period of the patient had already lapsed. So what they do is conduct contact-tracing of their close contacts up to the third generation, Ang said.*
