Over 1,000 advocates, families, and volunteers filled the north wing of SM City Bacolod on Sunday morning, March 29, for the local staging of the Happy Walk.
Organized by the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Inc. (DSAPI) in partnership with SM Cares, the event is a nationwide movement celebrating National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month. This year’s theme, #321andBeyond, representing the three copies of the 21st chromosome, brought together close to 300 individuals with Down Syndrome and their support circles.
The event was attended by high-profile advocates, led by Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson and DSAPI founding member and Chairman Emeritus, Tony Pasia. They were joined by Bacolod DSSD head Dr. Richelle Verdeprado-Mangga.
In his inspirational message, Pasia emphasized the importance of family and long-term support. “The Happy Walk is more than a parade; it is a testament to the unconditional love of families and a call for a society where our children can go all out in chasing their dreams,” Pasia shared.
Governor Lacson likewise expressed the provincial government’s commitment to inclusive programs that ensure no Negrense is left behind.
The morning took an upbeat turn as participants engaged in a festive parade around the mall. The atmosphere was maxed out with energy from a live band, bugle and lyre musicians, and majorettes. Children and parents carried colorful streamers, flaglets, and pompoms, while mascots added a festive touch to the route.
The Happy Walk has grown significantly since its beginnings in the early 2000s. SM Cares has been a consistent partner of DSAPI since 2007, helping the event evolve into a massive nationwide campaign with simultaneous satellite walks in SM City Cebu and the primary location at SMX Convention Center Manila.
Teams from SM City Bacolod and SM Markets, including Savemore, SM Supermarket, and Hypermarket, also joined the walk to show their all-out support for the PWD community.*
