Bacolod records 2nd leptospirosis death

• THERESA MAE DULMAN

A 34-year-old male driver from Barangay Felisa has been recorded as the second suspected leptospirosis-related death in Bacolod City for 2026.

The victim, a resident of Purok Totong, died on February 17, after a three-day hospitalization.

The Bacolod City Health Office (CHO) reported that the patient began experiencing symptoms five days prior to admission, including weakness in the lower extremities, nausea, epigastric pain, and jaundice.

Despite the signs, the patient initially tolerated the symptoms at home until an intermittent fever and worsening condition prompted him to seek medical consultation on February 14.

The CHO identified the immediate cause of death as sepsis, with severe leptospirosis listed as the antecedent cause.

The patient had a documented history of wading in floodwaters, a high-risk activity often associated with his occupation as a driver.

The latest fatality follows a previously reported death in January involving a vegetable vendor from Barangay Mandalagan.*
