The Bacolod City government is pushing to implement a new initiative to promote the use of reusable eco-bags by creating “green lanes” (G-Lanes) or priority checkout counters in supermarkets and grocery stores.
The goal is to reduce the use of single-use plastics for sustainable shopping practices.
The program was announced by Mayor Greg Gasataya, following a meeting with representatives from around 45 local establishments, including major retailers in Bacolod.
“By promoting reusable alternatives and reducing plastic waste, the city, together with its partners, reaffirms its commitment to protecting the environment for present and future generations,” Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office said in a social media post.
Gasataya also mentioned plans to expand the dialogue to include market vendors and other establishments.
“We are very happy with the response coming from supermarket and grocery owners as they are also willing to reduce the use of plastic,” he said.
In a press conference, Gasataya stated that he will issue an executive order to provide incentives for businesses that successfully implement the priority lanes and other plastic reduction measures.*
