Food waste collected from local hotels and restaurants is being transformed into organic fertilizer for urban gardens in Barangay Pahanocoy as part of the Sustainable Program for Resilient and Optimum Urban Transformation (SPROUT).
Bacolod Environment and Natural Resources Office Officer-in-Charge Atty. Allyn Luv Dignadice said that instead of contributing to the city’s waste disposal problem, these food scraps are processed into compost to grow high-value vegetables like lettuce and radish.
The program utilizes a multi-sectoral approach, primarily benefiting senior citizens and local homeowners.
Produce from these urban farms is also being showcased and sold at the Bacolod City booth in the Panaad Park and Stadium.*
