In continuing its legacy of producing boxing champions and enthusiasts, the Bago City Sports Office conducted a sparring session for aspiring boxers at the ABAP Gymnasium in Barangay Poblacion, Bago, Negros Occidental on Saturday.
At least 60 aspirants convened in the said session aiming to show their skills and talent in boxing and to be noticed by professional and amateur trainers.
The city’s sports office, which initiated the activity, said the sparring session was also witnessed by many other Bagonhon students who are interested and passionate in boxing.
The participants were mostly student-athletes aged 8 to 16 years old. They are part of the training camps established in barangays Ma-ao, Antipuluan, and Poblacion under the grassroots sports development program of Bago City Mayor Marina Javellana-Yao.
The Grassroots Sports Development Program is an initiative by the city that aims to train children and young aspirants in any field of sports that they are interested in. The city targets to produce more athletes that will represent the city and the province in the national and international arena.
“We aim to bring back the golden years of boxing in Bago City. We hope that there will be many boxers that we will discover here,” Javellana-Yao emphasized during her presence in the sparring session.
The city had also distributed boxing hand wraps to the participating boxers, expressing optimism that the city will be able to produce more boxing champions in the future to affirm its title as boxing capital.*
