Flyweight boxer John Wayne Vicera of Bago City, Negros Occidental, etched his name in the international arena after claiming bronze in the men’s 51kg division in the Guizhou International Boxing Tournament in China.

The 21-year-old Negrense boxer represented the Philippines and defeated his Kazakh opponent during the semifinals last July 21.

Vicera is one of the four Filipino boxers who competed in the tournament, sent by the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines, the governing body for amateur boxing in the country.

On the other hand, Bago City Mayor Marina “Mayette” Javellana-Yao appointed SEA Games Bronze Medalist James Palicte to spearhead the training of boxers in Bago City Boxing Grassroots Sports Development Program, in Louisiana and Ma-ao proper.

“Training young Bagonhons to become boxing superstars will continue the legacy of Bago as the Boxing Capital of the Philippines,” Bago City Information Office said in a social media post.

Moreover, the program gives free training to aspiring boxers ages 12 and below, every Monday to Saturday afternoon.*
