‘Bakwit Card’ to be issued to those affected by Kanlaon eruption

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of Negros Island Region is soon to institutionalize the issuance of “Bakwit Card” to residents living within the permanent danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano.

This follows the approval of the RDRRMC-NIR during its recent First Full Council Meeting, said Donato Sermeno III, the Office of Civil Defense regional director for NIR.

The “Bakwit Card” contains the name of the head of family and members, evacuation center where they will be staying, and what to bring during the evacuation, in case Kanlaon Volcano erupts.

This will ensure the efficient evacuation of the affected residents, Sermeno said.

Alert Level 2 presently remains hoisted over Kanlaon Volcano.

More than 100 families who are residents in the 4-kilometer danger zone of Kanlaon Volcano in La Castellana, Negros Occidental, and Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, are still occupying the evacuation centers.

OCD-NIR called on residents of communities located near Kanlaon to continue to be vigilant, in response to the continuing restiveness of the volcano.*
