Bacolod Councilor Dindo Ramos yesterday said they have authorized the conduct of experimental night market along Ballesteros Street, Bacolod City for two weekends, subject to the approval of the mayor.
If they find that it is viable, if it will not cause traffic congestion and acceptable to the public, then this will be formalized through an ordinance. The experimental night market, which will be conducted during weekends, started Friday, he said.
Ramos said they decided to hold the experimental night market during weekends (from Friday to Sunday) when traffic is not so heavy. There are also other places like Baguio City which have their own night markets.
However, it will be the next City Council which will decide whether the night market should be implemented, he said.
He recalled that Ballesteros Street was previously utilized as the venue for night market during the incumbency of former mayor Monico Puentevella.
The Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO) had earlier recommended the use of Ballesteros Street for the “Night Market” instead of Bonifacio Street, since it finds it more feasible.
This was in response to Sangguniang Panlungsod Resolution No. 418 Series of 2022 endorsing the letter of Sheila Versoza, president of the RTW and Retailers of Metro Bacolod Association, Inc. (RRMBAI), requesting to hold the “Night Market” from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. along Bonifacio Street.*
