In recognition of their remarkable efforts against illegal drugs, the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency Negros Island Region (PDEA-NIR) honored the Municipality of Basay in Negros Oriental on Monday.

Basay Mayor Jonny Wagas personally received the Balangay Seal of Excellence award from the PDEA-NIR Director Melvin Suarez Estoque at the Municipal Hall during the flag-raising ceremony.

It symbolizes exemplary performance and steadfast commitment to anti-illegal drug efforts at the local level, as Basay was previously declared a drug-cleared municipality on April 14, 2023, by the PDEA.

The Balangay Seal of Excellence is a recognition from the drug enforcement agency, honoring local government units that have successfully cleared all their barangays of illegal drugs and fulfilled rigorous national standards.

Furthermore, PDEA-NIR paid a courtesy visit to the office of the mayor to strengthen their coordination in imposing a drug-free municipality.

The visit focused on strategies to sustain Basay’s drug-cleared status and launch a drug abuse prevention education initiative in partnership with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, aiming to bolster peace, order, and community well-being.

Present at the awarding were PDEA Negros Oriental Provincial Officer Elmer Ebona and Negros Occidental Provincial Officer Gelly Robins Cataluña.*
