The observance of Earth Month brought together more than 330 volunteers at Purok Sisi, Magsungay in Barangay Singcang-Airport, on April 29, to help the community remove a large volume of plastic garbage from the shores.
The illegal dumping of garbage on various waterways has been a perennial problem of coastal communities because the garbage is washed up on their shorelines, affecting the livelihood of the local fisherfolks.
Eighteen tons of garbage were collected in the cleanup in just over an hour, because of the bayanihan spirit. The activity was witnessed by some city officials and environmentalists. The organizers advocate the regulation of use of plastic and the strict implementation of solid waste management.
The cleanup activity was organized by the Occidental Negros (Host) Lions Club, with the active participation and support of more than 330 volunteers from the Bacolod City Police Office, BCP Force Multipliers Federation, Bacolod City Unity Lions and Leo Club, JR Torres Elem School teachers, youth, fisherfolks and barangay leaders.*
