Another Negrense solon, who supported the speakership of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, got a major position in the House of Representatives.

Rep. Francisco Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) has been designated by Velasco as chairperson of the House Committee on Housing and Urban Development, a position previously occupied by his elder brother, former Rep. Alfredo Benitez.

“We take on the challenge to bring to the fore the silent struggle of the homeless and the poor who live in the streets, under bridges, in makeshift shanties along railways or rivers,” Benitez said in a statement issued by his office.

As a chairperson of the Committee on Housing and Urban Development, Benitez said that he will work towards new policies and programs that will address the country’s housing crisis, making housing affordable to low-income families, and to make the country’s cities and communities livable.

He also thanked Velasco for his trust and confidence in giving him the new responsibility.

Benitez replaced Cavite Rep. Strike Revilla, who has also been designated as one of the House deputy speakers. Abang Lingkod Rep. Stephen Paduano was also designated earlier as House minority floor leader, and Negros Oriental Rep. Arnie Teves among the House deputy speakers, following the election of Velasco the Speaker.*
