Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez yesterday spelled out requirements for him to support the joint venture between Central Negros Electric Cooperative and MORE Power Corporation, or any other firm.

If they will address lowering electricity rates, 24/7 supply of electricity and conversion to renewable energy, they have my support, Benitez said.

Such requirements are beneficial to the people of Bacolod City, he added.

CENECO acting general manager Arnel Lapore earlier confirmed that MORE Electric and Power Corp. and Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) have submitted an unsolicited proposal for a joint venture undertaking with CENECO.

MORE Electric and Power Corporation is owned by business tycoon Enrique Razon, while Meralco is led by its chairman, Manuel Lopez.

Lapore disclosed that the proposal was sent to the National Electrification Administration for comment and guidance.

Benitez said numerous complaints have been aired against CENECO over power outages, while others blamed it to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

If reports of a proposed joint venture between CENECO and MORE Electric and Power Corporation are true, Power Watch Negros secretary general Wennie Sancho said it only confirms their position that Ceneco is facing multifarious problems as an ailing electric cooperative.

If the JVA tandem is good, Sancho said it will mean better revenues for the cooperative and better services for the consumers.

Lapore said he personally believes a joint venture will be good for CENECO, citing a growing demand for power services.

The CENECO franchise ends in 2025.*
