You cannot choose your opponent.
This was the reply yesterday of Gov. Eugenio Jose “Bong” Lacson to reports that somebody may challenge him for his position in the 2022 national and local elections.
Lacson said he will just continue to do his work, adding that anybody has the right to run for public office.
“We will have to make a decision by October, the month for filing of certificates of candidacy,” Lacson said.
The possible gubernatorial candidate, who owns properties in southern Negros, is a lawyer by profession.
Lacson also expressed his confidence that the coalition between Love-Negros, of which he is a member, and the United Negros Alliance (UNegA) remains strong. “I have no reason to think that it will not hold,” he added.
Lacson earlier administered the oath-taking of the new set of UNegA officials, headed by Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Marañon III, with Vice Governor Jeffrey Ferrer as president.
“That tells us that the commitment is there,” he pointed out, apparently referring to the UNegA’s commitment to keep the coalition with Love-Negros in the provincial level. Ferrer said 14 mayors in Negros Occidental are members of UNegA, adding that unity among Love Negros and UNegA still prevails, and this is good for the development of the province.*
