Campaigning prohibited during Holy Week holidays

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reminded candidates for the 2025 midterm elections that campaigning during Maundy Thursday and Good Friday is strictly prohibited, with violators to face penalties under the Omnibus Election Code.

Atty. Lionel Marco Castillano, Comelec regional director for Negros Island Region, yesterday said that he is hoping that candidates and their supporters will respect the prohibition.

Comelec Resolution No. 10999 explicitly bans all forms of election campaigning or partisan political activities during the two Holy Week holidays.

Stressing that it is not only a religious activity, Castillano said it is an election offense to campaign during that period, which carries penalties, which includes disqualification from holding public office.

He also reminded candidates that campaigning a day before and during the election day is also prohibited.

The official campaign period for national candidates started February 11, while local candidates started their campaigns on March 28. Both periods will conclude on May 10, ahead of Election Day on May 12.*
