Capitol asks DICT to probe FB page hacking

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The help of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center has been sought to investigate the hacking of the Negros Occidental provincial government Facebook page.

“We want to know who is behind the hacking and the motive,” on Wednesday disclosed Czarina Magallanes Tan, head of the Provincial Information Division.

Photos of scantily dressed foreign women appeared on the Facebook page of the provincial government on Tuesday.

The hacked Facebook page of the Negros Occidental provincial government was recovered and restored on Wednesday, October 23.

Tan said they have further strengthened the security protocols of the provincial government official Facebook page, which posts updates on the activities of Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and the provincial government.

The provincial government FB page currently has 183,000 followers.

Tan disclosed that the process to regain control of the FB page was not easy.

She also acknowledged the help of Meta Philippines in regaining the access and control of the provincial government FB account.

We were not hopeful of recovering the account like what happened to other local government units. “But after our complaint, they contacted us within 24 hours and helped us recover the page,” Tan said.

If they can identify the persons behind the hacking, Tan said they will face charges for violating the Cybercrime Act.*
