Capitol taps NBI to probe pranksters

BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

The help of the National Bureau of Investigation Cybercrime Division will be tapped by the provincial government of Negros Occidental to track down the suspects who used the name of Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson in illegal activities, disclosed Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz yesterday.

Diaz said that somebody is using the name of Gov. Lacson in making fake reservations to a resort and restaurants in the cities of Talisay, Silay and Bago, Negros Occidental.

A warning was already given to all the establishments, not to believe any kind of booking personally made by the governor. He never does that, Diaz stressed.

Diaz said they should verify first with the Office of the Governor, or the Provincial Administrator’s Office, as he also admitted that a lawyer also called him up to verify if the governor made reservations at the Campuestuhan Highland Resort in Talisay City.

He admitted that such modus operandi, using a cellular phone, still poses a big challenge for them when it comes to tracing the calls, he said, stressing that it needs the expertise of NBI Cybercrime Division.

Diaz recalled that such gimmicks also happened during the elections, where the suspects tried to put some people in a bad light.

With the end of political season campaign, Diaz said he believes that it was purely a prank this time.*
