• THERESA MAE DULMAN
What was supposed to be a routine business transaction turned bloody when a 49-year-old man was hacked to death by a fellow carabao broker in the town of EB Magalona, Negros Occidental, on February 8.
The victim, identified as alias ‘Bongbong,’ had just finished negotiating the purchase of a carabao in Sitio Ronel, Barangay San Isidro, when he was intercepted by the suspect, 47-year-old alias ‘Joma,’ while on his way home.
Without warning, the suspect allegedly used a sugar cane cutter, locally known as espading, to strike the victim’s neck. The victim died after being hacked twice.
EB Magalona police cited professional jealousy and personal grudge as the likely motives.
Although the suspect fled the scene, he voluntarily surrendered to the Victorias City Police Station at 6 p.m. that same day.
The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the Municipal Health Office.
Authorities have confirmed that the suspect is now in custody and will face a charge of murder.*
