Along with the cash award was a Letter of Felicitation from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Alegre is a native of E. B. Magalona. Now a widow, she receives a monthly US Veterans pension.
She got married at the age of 16 to Melquiades Alegre, a member of the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) – a military formation active from 1941 to 1946 – but was widowed a year later when her husband died in World War 2. They had no children.
Alegre is now being taken care of by her niece, Cecilma Salahog, who lives with her.*
