Cholera cases in Negros Occidental are now up 100 percent, after rising to 24 as of November 4, with fatalities remaining at two, according to reports from the Provincial Health Office.
Talisay City logged 10 cases, followed by six each in Silay City and EB Magalona, where one death each was recorded. A further one case each in Calatrava and Victorias City was also logged.
Cases have increased from 12 two weeks ago, to 24 as of this week.
Cholera, which is caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacteria, is usually transmitted by contaminated water.
A cholera outbreak was previously declared in EB Magalona three barangays.
In comparison, Negros Occidental logged zero cholera cases from 2019 to 2021.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson earlier called on 20 local government units in Negros Occidental to organize their respective Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Committees, amid the rise of water-borne diseases in the province.
Cholera cases in highly urbanized Bacolod City also rose to nine, according to reports of its City Health Office.
The CHO has yet to identify the water source or other sources causing “sporadic” cholera cases in Bacolod City.*
