Former Supreme Court Justice Antonio Carpio urged Negrenses yesterday to choose competent, honest, patriotic, and visionary national leaders in the May 2022 synchronized elections.

Carpio, who spoke via Zoom at the launching of 1Sambayan Negros Occidental chapter at Acacia Grill Hotel in Bacolod City, said that these patriotic Filipinos will replace the officials of the Duterte administration, who are responsible for the extreme hardship on the lives of tens of millions of Filipinos.

“Together, we will search for these competent, honest and patriotic leaders, who will revive the national economy, generate employment, dispense  social aid to the poor, defend our sovereign territory and rights against foreign invasion, and provide a brighter future for our children and grandchildren,” Carpio, also an 1Sambayan lead convenor, said.

He congratulated former Negros Occidental Gov. Rafael Coscolluela for successfully organizing the first chapter ever of 1Sambayan in the Philippines.

On this Araw ng Kagitingan, brave Filipinos have gathered to save the country from despair, incompetence and lack of vision, Carpio said.

‘SAME PEOPLE?’

“Do we want the same people who have shown total incompetence in handling the pandemic, resulting in the worst economic performance of the country since Independence, forcing closure of over 50 percent of small and medium scale businesses and the unemployment of tens of millions of Filipinos, the absence of hospital beds, and the slow motion of vaccination of our people?”, he asked.

“Do we want the same people responsible for all these ‘kapalpakan’ to continue running the country for six more years, after May 2022,” he added.

Carpio also slammed the present administration for extrajudicial killings of more than 25,000 defenseless and poor Filipinos in the war against drugs, robbing Filipinos of a democratic way of life, civil liberties, and human rights, and refusing to defend the country’s sovereign territory in the West Philippines Sea against the invasion of China.

“We, in the 1Sambayan, and all of us, will unify the democratic forces in the country to bring good governance to the Filipino people, that will lift the people from poverty,” Carpio said.

Coscolluela said they are aiming to defeat attempts to perpetuate abusive powers in the guise of continuity in the 2022 elections.

He led members of the Negros Occidental 1Sambayan in signing a manifesto to field one opposition slate for president, vice president, and senators, and to work for their victory in next year’s elections. Coscolluela said that 1Sambayan rejects authoritarianism, opposes attempts to perpetuate power in the guise of continuity, liberates the country from incompetence and abusive rule, and empowers civil society under an effective and thriving democracy.*
