City Council approves P5M for 20th Bacolaodiat

The Bacolod City Council has greenlit a P5-million financial assistance package for the much-anticipated 20th Bacolaodiat Festival, set to usher in the Chinese Lunar New Year from January 31 to February 2.

Councilor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, chair of the City Council’s committee on appropriation and finance, confirmed the Council’s approval of a memorandum of agreement between Bacolod City and Bacolaodiat, Inc. This also includes Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez’s go-ahead to formalize the deal, the press release said.

Adding to the celebration, Benitez proposed a special resolution to honor Hans Sy as the “Adopted Son of Bacolod City” and Honorary Mayor during the festivities.

Hans T. Sy, a business tycoon and, as described by Benitez, a distinguished member of the Filipino-Chinese community, is renowned for his significant contributions to economic development, business leadership, and philanthropy, while serving as Adviser to the Board of SM Investments, Chairman of China Banking Corporation, Chairman of National University, and non-executive director at SM Prime.

The recognition spotlights Sy’s instrumental contributions to Bacolod’s economic and community growth. Bacolaodiat Inc. supported the gesture with a board resolution highlighting his leadership and lasting impact.

This year’s Bacolaodiat Festival is set to spotlight cultural heritage, economic partnerships, and community unity, with the city’s financial backing and honorary recognition cementing its role in Bacolod’s continued progress.*
