The newly appointed Assistant City Veterinarian Dr. Janine Sarthou said animal welfare groups have the right to be mad with the poor conditions of the City Dog Pound in Barangay 35, Bacolod City.
During her inspection, Sarthou found the dog pound, which is built to accommodate only 100 dogs, was holding 178 rescued animals, a population nearly twice its proper capacity.
Widespread illness is compounding the issue, with Sarthou noting that almost all of the rescued dogs are suffering from skin problems.
Three dogs had to be placed in quarantine due to serious illnesses, including diarrhea.
Despite the extensive issues, she confirmed that deworming was immediately implemented as a primary intervention.
In a media interview, Sarthou stated that while she wanted to temporarily halt the impounding of stray dogs due to the capacity issue, she was informed of an upcoming impounding schedule near the Manokan Country within the week.
The assistant veterinarian assured that the City Veterinary Office will now focus on providing better care and management for the dogs currently housed in the pound.*
