Due to inclement weather brought about by the effects of Tropical Storm Leon, Mayor John Rey Tabujara, on Tuesday suspended classes on all levels in 74 schools in Cauayan, Negros Occidental.
Tabujara said they observed heavy rains at coastal areas of the town, as early as 6 a.m. yesterday.
“This is to prevent students from being stranded due to flooding that may happen,” the mayor said, noting also the weather was “unpredictable.”
Ian Arnold Arnaez, DepEd – Negros Occidental Schools Division spokesman, said the classes will shift to automatic modular learning so as not to affect school days.
Leon (international name Kong-Rey) has intensified into a typhoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 160 kph, the weather bureau said Tuesday.
The typhoon was located 555 km east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.
Leon is forecast to bring gusty winds in Visayas, Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Camiguin, according to the state weather bureau PAGASA.*
