Coastal cleanup held for World Oceans Day

Coastal cleanups marked World Oceans Day in Bacolod City, with 1,500 multi-sectoral volunteers simultaneously cleaning up the coastline at the villages of Singcang-Airport, Banago and Punta Taytay. A total of 14.99 tons of coastal garbage were collected.*

More than a thousand volunteers came together on June 14 to clean up the coastal areas of Purok Sisi and Purok Sigay in Barangay Singcang-Airport, as SM City Bacolod partnered with the City Government of Bacolod, BENRO, and local barangay officials in observance of World Oceans Day 2025 and Philippine Environment Month, a press release from SM City Bacolod said.

The environmental effort, which followed the global theme “WONDER: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” brought together a diverse group of participants: SM employees and the malls’ security force, LGU staff, SK officers, and barangay leaders led by Captain Rosinie Distrito. Councilor-elect Caesar Distrito also visited the area to show his support.

The cleanup in Singcang-Airport yielded 8.055 tons of collected waste. This was part of a larger citywide initiative organized by BENRO, which mobilized a total of 1,500 volunteers across three barangays Singcang-Airport, Punta Taytay (4.680 tons collected), and Banago (2.255 tons collected). In total, nearly 15 tons of garbage were removed from Bacolod’s coastlines.

Held in coordination with SM Cares, the activity forms part of SM’s Waste Free Future campaign, which promotes eco-conscious practices like plastic waste reduction, e-waste collection, and recycling markets in local communities.*
