The Commission on Elections logged about 21,000 voter registrants in Western Visayas in the first two weeks of registration, which was described by Comelec regional director Dennis Ausan as a “good number.”
Ausan, who led the one-day Voter Education and Registration Fair at SM City Bacolod Event Center on February 23, however, said that they need to campaign more for people to register.
The resumption of voter registration is also in line with the midterm elections next year.
Ausan called on Western Visayas voters “not to wait for the last month, last week or last few days to go to the different registration centers.”
The registration of voters will end September 30 this year, and the filing of certificates of candidacy for the elections in May next year, is slated for the first of October.
Ausan also said that they will also conduct registration of voters even in remote areas, so that the people may no longer have to go to the poblacion. “It will be the Comelec who will go to them,” he added.
To capture the youth, there will also be satellite registration in malls, he added.
The Commission is open to accommodate anyone, even on Saturdays and holidays, especially those who are working, and students, Ausan further said.*
