As the world works to restore confidence in the floundering travel industry, the United Nations World Tourism Organization is gaining traction in the establishment of an international code for the protection of tourists.

In a statement, the UNWTO said the Committee for the Development of an International Code for the Protection of Tourists recently met for the second time, bringing the establishment of the landmark legal framework a step closer to reality.

“The diverse range of observers reflected the strong desire in an international code designed to offer tourists greater protection as consumers and to spread the responsibility of assisting tourists affected by emergency situations across the whole of the sector,” the UNWTO said.

The initiative was announced a few weeks ago. The UNWTO emphasized that the framework would make support available to tourists affected by emergency situations clearer and more consistent globally. This works in line with restoring confidence in the tourism sector that is among the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Establishing a standard set of minimum consumer protection standards for tourists will help make people feel safer and more confident in international travel. And it will also ensure that the responsibility of managing the disruptions caused by this pandemic is shared fairly across the whole of our sector,” UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Poloilkashvili said.

With countries still dealing with wave after wave of Covid-19 outbreaks, confidence in the travel and tourism sector has been shattered. As affected nations, like the Philippines, struggle to restore a sense of normalcy among their people, tourism will have to remain in the sidelines until the pandemic is sufficiently controlled.

Preparations for a reopening of our country to travelers are already in full swing but the tourism industry will have to wait until we can prove to the rest of the world that our towns and cities have been made safe from Covid-19.

While the international community has been exerting all efforts to restore confidence in the sectors and industries that have been most affected by the pandemic, let us focus on making our communities as safe as possible, because the only way tourists will start coming back is when communities can prove that they have successfully made their residents safe.*
