A 48-year-old police officer survived an unprovoked attack yesterday morning after being struck with a steel pipe and nearly being stabbed along Luzuriaga Street near the Central Market in Barangay 12, Bacolod City.
The victim is identified as Police Chief Master Sergeant Johnny Dela Peña, 48, an investigator from Police Station 1 and a resident of Barangay Sum-ag.
The suspect was identified as Juan Villon Jr., 56, is a resident of Barangay Bata, Bacolod City.
Initial investigations conducted by Police Station 1 revealed that the officer was walking in the area at approximately 7:50 a.m. when the suspect approached from behind and hit him on the head with a pipe.
Following the initial blow, the suspect reportedly drew a knife and attempted to stab the officer.
In a bid to defend himself, the victim drew his service firearm and shot the suspect in the right leg.
Both the victim and the suspect were immediately brought to the hospital for medical treatment.*
