• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

A policeman died in a road crash on Sunday, at Guanzon Street in Brgy. 1 poblacion, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The victim, a 32-year-old member of the PNP Maritime Command, was on his way to a Maritime Command sub-station in Brgy. Daan Banwa, Kabankalan City, when the motorcycle he was driving sideswiped the rear left steel railing of a parked Foton close van truck, police investigations showed.

He was immediately brought to the Kabankalan District Hospital for treatment of his injuries. However, the police officer was declared dead on arrival at the medical facility, disclosed PLt. Col. Roberto Indiape, Kabankalan City police chief.

Initial police investigations indicated the cargo truck was parked at the outermost lane of the highway without an early warning device, although its hazard lights were on.

Responding police investigators also recovered the 9mm service firearm of the victim at the scene of the incident.

The police officer was the sixth victim of a road crash during the weekend, which has claimed the lives of five other persons, including a public school teacher in La Castellana.

All of the victims were riding motorcycles when the vehicular crashes took place.*
