To further protect the coastal areas of EB Magalona, home of the famous blue crabs in EB Magalona, Negros Occidental, it is now a requirement for couples attending the mass wedding every February 14, Valentine’s Day, to plant mangrove trees.

This is also part of the continuing expansion of mangrove areas of the Tomongtong Eco trail, one of the tourist destinations in EB Magalona, disclosed Mayor Marvin Malacon yesterday, who officiated the mass wedding of 33 couples at the town plaza covered court.

For the past seven years, the pre-wedding activities were organized by the Local Civil Registrar’s Office (LCRO), headed by Mercedes Recla, and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer Jojo Vargas.

Vargas started and implemented the mangrove planting among the mass wedding couples, also as part of the Solid Waste Management (SWM) orientation, to symbolize their shared commitment and responsibility to protect the environment.

Thousands of mangrove trees have been planted at the Eco Trail by couples since it was made a requirement seven years ago.

Malacon also said that the mangrove trees are also among the sources of livelihood for residents of Brgy. Tomongtong in EB Magalona, aside from being actively involved in the blue crab industry.

The mass wedding activity was also attended by a representative of the Philippine Statistics Authority- Statistician Specialist Antonietta Gador, Vice Mayor Eric Matulac, and members of the EB Magalona Sangguniang Bayan.

Each mass wedding couple-participant also received a sack of rice, P2,000 in cash, as well as special prizes for best in wedding attire, early birds, oldest couple, and birthday awards.*
