COVID-19 fatalities mostly unvaccinated – PHO

BY GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Majority of COVID-19 deaths this month in Negros Occidental were unvaccinated persons, disclosed Assistant Provincial Health Officer Dr. Jessica Fama yesterday.

Fama clarified that the 10 COVID-19 deaths reported on August 25 by the Provincial Incident Management Team covered the period of one week.

PIMT records showed the fatalities increased from seven in July, to 25, with less than a week before the end of August.

Fama reported that aside from being unvaccinated, the COVID-19 fatalities were persons with comorbidities and senior citizens.

She also stressed that they are campaigning hard for vaccination, as she emphasized the importance of booster shots for vaccinated individuals.

Under the ongoing Pinaslakas campaign of the national government, Fama said each of the Municipal and City Health Offices in the province were given targets to achieve in their vaccination drive, within the first 100-day period of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in office.

Fama said that 90 percent of the 80 percent targeted population of Negros Occidental should be vaccinated, which she described as a “tall order,” noting that 680,000 are yet to be vaccinated and 910,000 yet to receive booster shots.*
