CPP-NPA sustaining losing streak in Negros

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Remnants of the New People’s Army in Negros Island sustain their losing streak, following two government initiated encounters in Himamaylan City and Cauayan, Negros Occidental, that resulted in the death of two rebels and recovery of 10 high powered guns and explosives.

In a statement, Lt. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, AFP Visayas Command chief, said that they are determined to end the local armed conflict in the region in the soonest possible time.

“Our efforts will continue to be relentless, and we will sustain the momentum,” he said.

Seven of the 10 high powered guns were recovered by the 94th Infantry Battalion during a recent encounter with remnants of the Central Negros 2 in Brgy. Buenavista, Himamaylan City, where two NPA members also surrendered.

Two other rebels linked to the ambush slay of two members of the 15th Infantry Battalion, also died in an encounter with Army soldiers in Brgy. YaoYao, Cauayan, that resulted in the recovery of three high powered guns and an anti-personnel mine, according to the 302nd Infantry Brigade.

With these series of setbacks, Arevalo said the CPP-NPA in the region are now hard pressed against the wall, and they intend to keep it that way.

We will not give them space to breathe, the VISCOM chief, stressing also that “remnants of the NPA will only have two options, either return to the folds of the law and live, or continue wasting their lives and die for nothing.”*
