Colegio de San Agustin Bacolod (CSA-B) upset Luisa Medel National High School (LMNHS) in extra time 69-65 in the 1st United Negros Basketball League (UNBL) Aspirants Cup in their game held Wednesday at the Msgr. John Liu Activity Center.

CSA-B was in the driver’s seat with more than 2 minutes remaining in the game with the score at 55-49. However, LMNHS tightened up their full court defense, offensive rebounding, and forced turnovers, leading to a 10-0 run engineered by Jester Paypa, Zelrey Lamela and Micko Villarosa to take a 55-59 lead with 1:02 left in regulation.

In response, King Sarmiento and Hyden Sante each nailed back to back pressure packed free throws to force the deadlock with 19 seconds left. LMHSC then missed the golden opportunity to win outright in regulation with 4 missed free throws, sending the game into overtime.

During the extra period, LMNHS held a 63-62 advantage on a Paypa drop shot at the 1:07 mark, but the CSA-B boys coached by John Felix Garrido kept their composure, as the trio of Jamil Balisi, JhiaTreyes, and Leon Cuadra closed out the game with a 7-2 run to complete the upset.

Sarmiento sizzled for 33 points, delivering with 26 in the second half.  Lance Arrey scored 14 and Balisi had 6.

The Christian Francisco Yasa mentored LMNHS was led by Paypa’s 22 points, Chester Dale Andales added 12, and Lamela and Ralph Chennai Arceño had 10 apiece.

The CSA-B victory temporary derailed the outright quarterfinals spot for LMNHS. With only the top 2 spots in the 2 brackets assured, it will still be a dogfight for the last 2 slots still up for grabs this weekend.
