Colegio San Agustin Bacolod and University of St. La Salle topped their respective brackets in the 17-and-under category of the United Negros Basketball League 2nd Chairman’s Cup games played last Sunday at the Msgr. John Liu Activity Center.
CSA-B finished atop Bracket A with a 6-0 card, and USLS claimed its bracket with a 5-0 record. Being undefeated, both teams gained a twice to beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
CSA-B overpowered Red Owl 68-48, led by Aldwyn Yso and Royal Star Player of the game Sam Sagansay, who scored 15 points each, while Ceasar Bigcas dropped 10 and Brent Magno finished with 6. Red Owl got production from Renojay Florendo – 19 points, Renzo Panergo – 11, and Gabriel Buenafe – 9.
USLS had some anxious moments before finally closing out C&C Café / Ang Bata Hardware with a final score of 53-46. C&C managed to take the lead going into the break, 26-24, but could only manage 20 points in the second half, while USLS ignited a 3rd quarter run to take the lead for good going to the 4th quarter, 43-37, as Emmanuel Salvio and Rojie Enderes scored 6 points apiece. A poor offensive by USLS, scoring only 10 points in the payoff quarter, hardly mattered as Ang Bata Hardware also struggled, failing to score in the double digits in the deciding frame.
Salvio paced USLS with 10 points, Gabriel John Bañas – 9, and Phillipe Sison – 8; against Leopoldo Apdo – 11, Johnmer Capulot – 9, and Francis Camiento – 8.
Jaguars La Carlota got a free pass into the quarterfinals, nailing the fourth spot in Bracket B when the Bobcats forfeited the match. 1Negros Jaguars then turned back Red Owl 66-50 for their second win, where Earl Biason paced the Jaguars with 18 points, backstopped by Reigner Andrie Torres and Sade Mark Santero connecting for 10 and 9 points, respectively. Florendo and Panergo combined to score 22 for Red Owl.
Bacolod Tay Tung High School outplayed St. Joseph School-La Salle Lineage, 80-46 in the 15-U game. Francis Lamasan bannered BTTHS with 17 points, Jameer Gapusan – 16, Jhalil Sultan – 9, Kyle Pimentel – 8. For SJS-LS, Raffy Canatoy and Khenz John Saligumba contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
BTTHS ended their elimination campaign at 4-1 to force a 3-way logjam for the top spot in Bracket B with Talisay Sharks and St. John’s Institute. After the quotient system was applied, the Sharks came out on top, SJI second, and BTTHS third.
Red Owl salvaged a victory in their 15-U game over 1Negros Jaguars, 63-56. Jhojun Tenacio dropped 22 points, Kert Española – 20, and Gabriel Gangoso – 7. Meanwhile, Aldrei Panguiton and John Anthony Posadas unloaded 13 markers apiece for 1Negros.
John Erick Cagalcal led NYBC with 18 points over the Bobcats to a win, 64-56. Ritz Orlen Dioso added 12, Jayven Pachoro and Zaijhan Debide submitted 8 each, and Kurt Daniel Rebadomia tallied 6. The Bobcats relied on Gabrielle Soberano who scored 17, Asher Lamprea – 14, Jhelmer Auquico – 8, and Kyle Maja – 7.
