The Department of Agriculture (DA) will push through with cloud seeding operations, as the rains being experienced in Western Visayas “is not very constant yet,” according to Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson.

Lacson said he was already informed by DA Western Visayas that a budget of P6 million for cloud seeding operations, not only in Negros Occidental, but also other provinces of Region 6, is now available for use.

They (DA) are saying that since the clouds are there, let’s make use of it, the governor said, adding that the cloud seeding operations will further enhance the rains.

While there have been recent rains in various parts of Negros Occidental, DA assistant regional director Engr. Albert Barrogo said “it is still below normal, based on the forecast of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).”

The Negros Association of Chief Executives, led by Victorias City Mayor Javier Miguel Benitez, earlier passed a resolution requesting the DA to immediately conduct cloud seeding operations in Negros Occidental, in order to promptly and adequately address the massive and extensive drought caused by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

Drought has already destroyed P535.6 million in crops and livestock in Negros Occidental.

Lacson said that the cloud seeding operations will be a welcome relief to farmers, especially those in the sugar industry.*
