DepEd to continue learning engagements in Kanlaon-affected communities

• GILBERT P. BAYORAN

Amid the continuing unrest of Kanlaon Volcano, the Department of Education in Negros Island Region vowed to do its best to continue learning engagements with students displaced by the eruption.

Ramir Uytico, DepEd regional director for Negros Island Region, said he wants school officials in affected areas to ensure that learners should continue their studies, even if is not in a perfect learning environment.

Some students in areas affected by the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Occidental could find themselves without classrooms when classes open on June 16.

This has developed after some schools continue to serve as evacuation centers for people displaced by Kanlaon.

Uytico said scheduling of classes into morning and afternoon shifts could be arranged in schools converted into evacuation centers.

Ian Arnold Arnaez, spokesperson of the division office, said enrollment in public schools and areas near Kanlaon Volcano, particularly La Castellana, has begun.

That will be the basis for the number of learning spaces they will need to open classes on June 16, Arnaez said.

Uytico admitted that the Kanlaon eruption is a challenge for the Department of Education, particularly on how to continue the studies of learners staying at the evacuation centers.

Each school division in the affected communities and DepED regional office have already formulated their respective contingency plans to address the challenges brought up by the Kanlaon eruption, he added.*
